2011 SDS/2 Users Group Conference a Success

More than 150 SDS/2 users, Design Data representatives and industry partners attended the 2011 SDS/2 Users Group Conference, held September 22-23 at The Cornhusker in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Lieutenant Wohlgemuth from United States Strategic Command, headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska, served as the event's keynote speaker, touching on topics that included leadership and decision making under pressure. Lieutenant Wohlgemuth emphasized the importance of keeping your calm during times of adversity, taking responsibility for your actions, being courageous, and valuing those below you.

This year's conference featured sessions that focused on SDS/2 v7.2 and v7.3 enhancements, the 14th Edition AISC Steel Construction Manual, BIM, galvanizing, Bluebeam PDF Revu, custom members, and custom parametrics, among other topics. Attendees at the Users Group Conference received a bound workshop overview book that included presentations and notes on each of the sessions. To view PDFs of these sessions, click here.

The first day of the two-day conference was capped off by a reception at Bluestem Vineyard in Crete, Nebraska. The evening included a cocktail hour and dinner buffet, followed by the annual presentation of the Connector's Club award and a raffle drawing.

Code Clash 2011

Jonathan Greig, Kurt Apted Code Clash Winners

Design Data's SDS/2 Code Clash 2011 parametric competition highlights the creative minds of SDS/2 users and promotes the creation of parametrics within the SDS/2 community. Winners were announced during the SDS/2 Users Group Conference. They are:

Framing and Finishing
Jonathan Greig from Selvaggio Steel, Inc. was the winner in the Framing and Finishing category. This category focuses on parametrics whose main purpose is to add members or material to an SDS/2 model.

Beyond the Bolts

This category focuses on parametrics that do not add anything directly to an SDS/2 model, but instead do some type of auxiliary work, such as generating reports or some other kind of output that could be used with other software outside of SDS/2.

SDS/2 Customers Featured in October Issue of Modern Steel Construction

The October issue of Modern Steel Construction includes contributions from Paxton & Vierling Steel's Mark Holland, P.E., and Structural Detailing, LLC's Brian Cobb, P.E.

Holland was a contributor to "20 Tips from the Top Project Managers," which detailed key ingredients of successful projects. His tips included always having a schedule, using a project kickoff checklist, having a standardized folder system, and sharing models: "You don't need to be working on a major BIM project to share your project details and images with your customer. Consider setting up an online meeting and use the detailing applications you have to assist in getting your point across about a project."

In an article titled, "How Much Do You Love Your Detailing Software?" Cobb spoke at length on the strengths of SDS/2, including connections, 3D capabilities and drawings: "SDS/2's 3D capability is second to none. The software recognizes framing clashes automatically, helps us to visualize difficult situations, and provides intelligent models for coordination and information that allow us to stay at the forefont of the BIM movement."
